As part of its centennial celebration, National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) suggested that “affiliates may want to pursue creating and publicizing a new or an updated Literary Map.” Previous to the creation of this website, Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English (WCTE) had never had an online literary map, although a newly-updated print literary map is available for sale on the WCTE website. WCTE is interested in promoting our Wisconsin authors through this unique website dedicated to that mission.
The objectives of the LitMap Project include:
• Promoting Wisconsin authors in a searchable website format;
• Helping Wisconsin localities to recognize their native authors, novelists, poets, journalists, and essayists;
• Celebrating the NCTE centennial by participating in one of their suggested affiliate activities;
• Promoting our Wisconsin affiliate by featuring prominent links to and recognition of WCTE on the literary map website;
• Providing school districts both in Wisconsin and abroad with easy to access information and links to Wisconsin authors.
An additional note about the selection of authors: We cannot hope to include every Wisconsin author, especially in light of the new self-publishing phenomenon. For this project, we have chosen to include those authors who have at least one work published through traditional means (traditional publishers, literary magazines, journals), having gone through a selection and editing process.
The LitMap Project has been made possible through funding by the Robert C. Pooley Research Foundation in the form of a grant proposal created by WCTE member Lynn Aprill, a former English and history teacher in Bonduel, WI and former Director of Education for Economic Development at CESA 8 in Gillett, WI. Lynn continues to maintain the website as a recent retiree and current Executive Director of WCTE.
The Robert C. Pooley Foundation is an educational foundation the purpose of which shall be the financial support of the advancement of the teaching of English in the elementary and secondary schools of the state of Wisconsin, as well as of other Council activities of the kinds enumerated in Article I, Section 2, of the By-Laws of the Constitution of the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English, Inc.
